The first recorded ascent of Mount Kenya was in 1899 by Sir Halford John Mackiner, Josef Brocherel and Cesar Ollier. Today, there are several mountaineering routes, and the south side is best climbed in January and February, while August and September are best for the north side although the park is open all year round. Hiking Mt. Kenya is certainly more difficult in the rainy seasons on March to June and October to December. Typically, early mornings on the mountain bring sunny dry weather with clouds often forming by noon.
Although hiking and mountaineering are popular here, wildlife viewing and bird watching are also popular. About 340 species of birds can be seen here. High class hotels are located on the mountains lower slopes. Camping facilities are also available and permitted.
